More than 90 million people suffer from chronic halitosis or bad breath. In most cases it originates from the gums and tongue. The odour is caused by bacteria from the decay of food particles, other debris in mouth, and poor oral hygiene. The decay and debris produce a sulfur compound that causes the unpleasant odour. |

Mouth contains variety of Bacteria that form a sticky film called plaque. Bacteria create toxins which irritate the gums and subsequently affect the bone anchoring the tooth. Plaque not removed in routine brushing hardens into a rough porous deposit called 'calculus', which has to be removed by a dentist. 80%-90% of teenagers have some form of gingivitis which should be taken care of very soon.

While seldom painful and with no obvious signs, periodontal disease can progress undetected to the point where supporting bone is destroyed. 75% of adult tooth loss for people over the age of 35 is due to periodontal disease. Early treatment and prevention is essential. While periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a number of other factors contribute to the development of this condition. eg. Diabetes can aggravate the condition.
